20130517NleaKmClubDay13-0002What a fabulous morning! How much fun we had! Plus super Finale Party treats! You ran way over 5500 laps, Northlea – good for 1130 kilometers! It also brought your total exactly over 6,000 kilometers!

The last day of the 2013 Kilometre Club was definitely the best! An amazing amount of 330 runners (plus siblings, plus parents, and others) came out, many of them at 7:30 a.m. or otherwise well before the usual start time of 8 a.m. One student kept going the whole time and logged 60 laps (12 kilometers)! However, Km. Club is not all – not at all! - competitive. Whether you run, walk, or skip - the most important part is having fun!
All the runners together, encouraged by many dozens of supporters, ran a total of 5651 laps. That was more than enough to once again run all the (virtual) way from Halifax to Vancouver. In fact, we would even have made it there if we’d started further east!

Thank you Rob & Jessie: All people attending, adults and kids, were treated to beverages (water, juice, coffee) and snacks (healthy ones! fruit, nutri bars). The H&S Association thanks Rob and Jessie Trembletts from the Valu-Mart on Bayview for their generous contributions. We also highlighted the fabulous cooperation between Northlea and Trembletts through the Shop * Get * Give program: shop at the Valu-Mart with your Northlea card/fob, and get 5% off – with an additional 5% for Northlea!

Fabulous Class efforts:  Many, many classes came out with an amazing amount of students, not alone on Friday but for the entire 2.5 week duration of the Kilometre Club. Today, the class of Mr. Suokonautio, with 21 participants (indeed, almost everybody).
Measured over the full 2.5 weeks over the Kilometer Club, the top-5 classes with the most participants are …
1. Mme Woolner; 2. M. Lariviere; 3. Mme Lambert; 4. Mme McInnis PM; 5. Ms. Gulian (f. Cornish). And yes, those are indeed afternoon Kindergartners coming to school in the morning to participate!
Measured in kilometers, the top-5 of classes were M. Lariviere, Mme Woolner, Ms. Gulian, Mme Lambert and Mme Yoon.

This means that the Pizza lunches were awarded to the classes of Mme Woolner (for Primary), and Mme Shulman (for Junior/Intermediate) – Congratulations!

20130510NleaKmClubDay9-0005On behalf of all participants, parents, and the entire Northlea School Community, we thank organizer Claude Lukawesky, and her team (including Kennis Kim and Jeannie Sit) for once again organizing a fabulous Kilometre Club. We also thank the many, many volunteers (students and parents), and staff including Mr. Kennedy. Please read Claude’s message, about the great stories from the km. club: here!

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

20130515NleaKmClubDay11-0005May 16 update: Almost 700 kilometers Thursday! Special Finale Celebration on Friday
Fabulous performance, runners! With a total of almost 700 kilometers, we broke the 2013 Kilometre Club record by a landslide. we also had more runners come out than any day before, and many of them came for the early start at 7:45 a.m.

20130515NleaKmClubDay11-0003We have lots of runners doing more than 30 laps (6 kilometers!) and one who broke the record by completing 40 laps. Special mention, again, to the classes of Mlle. Woolner and Mlle Yoon, who both logged more than 250 laps! Did you know that is more than 50 kilometres?!

On our virtual trip across Canada, we made a huge jump and are now well beyond Calgary and close to the B.C. border. It is a long stretch from to Vancouver, but on our Special Finale Celebration on Friday, we may just make it!

  • Which class does best on Friday? Will any class do more laps than the classes of Mlle Woolner and Mlle Yoon? Surely our grade 5s, 6s, 7s, and 8s can?
  • With another fifteen minutes of running (dozens of people were ready to go on Thursday 7:45), will anybody break the 40 lap record?

Friday: Special Kilometre Club Finale with food and drinks from Tremblett’s Valu-Mart!

If you have participated this year, make sure to join the Kilometre Club the rest of this week, and especially on Friday. We are delighted that our Rob and Jessi from Tremblett’s Valu-Mart will visit Northlea, and they are bringing treats! Think fresh fruit and something to drink for after the running/walking (!), plus coffee for the adults.

Great job again runners! Even on a chilly morning you combined on Tuesday for more than 400 kilometers – our highest total in a week! Many classes combined for more than 100 laps today, which is fabulous! Don’t forget: there is a pizza lunch on offer for the class with the most runners, so get your class mates to come out!

20130514NleaKmClubDay10-0001Working our way across Canada, we moved from Manitoba into Saskatchewan. Running over 4,000 kilometers from Halifax (!), we have reached the Town if Indian Head – home, among other things, to many beautiful historic buildings (like Saskatchewan’s very first Round Barn, read here).

May 13 update: Kilometer Club runs past Winnipeg on Monday!

The last week of Kilometre Club! We have had nine fabulous days of running, walking, and riding (wheelchairs & strollers). It was good to see a number of people as well at the Spring Into Action event on Saturday with Barry and Olympic rower Chris Jarvis.

So far we have averaged over 400 kilometers per day, and have made our way into Manitoba. We are again trying to make it across Canada from Halifax to Vancouver. There are many miles kilometers :-) to go though, so let’s all go out, and run as much as we can!

On Monday, Ms. Woolner’s class managed over 150 laps – Way to Go!

May 10 update: Kilometre Club about to head into Manitoba!

Great job, Northea Runners & Walkers!

On Friday, we added another 331 kilometers to the total. Following Terry Fox’ original route, we have now made it along the Trans-Canada Highway all the way from Halifax to Kenora, Ontario. We will enter Manitoba and head for Winnipeg next Monday!

With very much going on at Northlea, not all our daily totals (runners, laps, kilometers) are as high as last year. To make it across Canada, we need much more than 2000 kilometers in the next five days. So let’s all go out on Monday, grab some friends – and did you know that adults (parents!) can also join the club and get counted?!

May 9 update: Kilometre Club heads for Thunder Bay!

kmclub0001Perhaps scared of by - totally false – forecasts of rain, both the number or runners and the amount of laps run dipped a little on Thursday. Hopefully Friday (weather permitting), we will once again start the promising climb from week 1.

That said, 360 fun run kilometers did get us over Three Thousand Kilometers! On the way from Sault Ste. Marie to Thunder Bay, we arrived in the township of Melgund, in the Kenora District of Ontario.

Weather alert: Today was another superb day for running. So far, Spring has been superb for Kilometre Club. Even as a few millimeters of rain is forecast for Friday morning, the predicted precipitation thankfully has gone way down. That said, please note that there will be no Kilometer Club if it really rains!
We hope to update this message on the website by 7:30 a.m. in the morning if Kilometre Club is cancelled. Otherwise, we’re a go!

May 8 Update: Kilometre Club already past Sault Ste. Marie!

20130507 NleaKmClubDay4-0002Running, running, running! With much other activities on the go, the number of runners was down a bit on Wednesday, but those present stepped up and combined for a great distance of 395 kilometers!
Powering along the Trans-Canada Highway, we are now 50 kilometers past Sault St. Marie, running along Lake Superior. If we can get a few good days in, we may get near Thunder Bay tomorrow, and approach the Manitoba border after Friday!

Let’s Go For It, Northlea!!!

20130507 NleaKmClubDay4-0010Weather alert: Today was a superb day for running (or soccer tournaments, or 100 meter run-offs, or Massey Hall repetitions, for that matter). So far, Spring has been superb for Kilometre Club. Even as a few millimeters of rain are now in the forecast for the next days, the predicted precipitation thankfully has gone way down. May 7 update: Kilometre Club runs Halifax-Sudbury in only five days!

20130507 NleaKmClubDay4-0012Great Job, Northlea! Another excellent total of 450+ kilometers were run, walked, and wheeled by the members of the Kilometre Club on Tuesday. That brings us from Toronto to past Sudbury in only five of the thirteen days!

We have had great weather, and have seen everybody come out: from parents to Kindergartners joining their older siblings – even several kids pushing their injured class mate in his wheelchair.

20130507 NleaKmClubDay4-0007Please note:

  • To make it across Canada again, we need all hands on deck! Most mileage is of course often reached by the older students – so please Intermediates and grade 5/6: help us out?!

  • Weather alert:
So far, Spring has been superb. Wednesday is looking great, Thursday likely as well. Friday does have some light rain in the forecast. Please note that there will be no Kilometer Club if it really rains!
We hope to update this message on the website by 7:30 a.m. in the morning if Kilometre Club is cancelled.

May 3 Update: Kilometre Club runs 1246 kilometres in three days!

20130501NleaKmClubDay2-0008With a fabulous Friday total of 470 kilometers, the Northlea students  (and yes, some parents) in the Kilometre Club broke the record for 2013 thus far

In our run across Canada, we have traveled from Halifax, NS through New Brunswick and we are now 5km past Montreal! (see map on the right). According to our rough calculations, that means we need only about 550 more kilometers to make it to Toronto! Can we do that on Monday?!

20130501NleaKmClubDay2-0007We have already had a number of distinguished guests. On Wednesday, we were joined by Toronto City Councillor John Parker, and next Monday, we are likely joined by a true Olympian again! Stay tuned, and keep coming out!

Please note that Kilometre Club runs until (and including) May 17, and starts 8 a.m. sharp in the morning, until 8:30. If it rains, there is no Kilometre Club. Please keep an eye out for the weather, and make sure to apply sun screen, and bring water.

May 2 Update: Kilometre Club runs 775 kilometres in two days!

20130501NleaKmClubDay1-0005The 2013 Kilometre Club is off to a running start!

  • On day 1, May 1, 100s of runners combined for exactly 375 kilometers. Projected on a map of Canada, it brought us from Halifax deep into New Brunswick (halfway Moncton and Frederickton)
  • Day 2, Thursday May 2, brought even more kilometers (400!), and sees the Northlea runners arrive at Larivière-du-Loup.

See you again on Friday, and everyday until May 17th!
