Dear Northlea Parents/Guardians/Caregivers,
This letter is to inform you of an upcoming construction project at Northlea Elementary and Middle School.
I am pleased to share that, thanks to the generosity and commitment of the Northlea community, we have
successfully reached our fundraising goal of $120,000 to support the Northlea School Yard Revitalization.
As a result, construction on our school grounds is set to begin on June 6, 2025, starting with the back field.
This work will continue for the rest of the school year and summer, with an approximate completion date in
September. Please note that construction may need to continue into the fall depending on weather
conditions and project progress.
Planned enhancements include:

  • New turf field
  • Trees planted with seat walls
  • Multi-use sports court (badminton, volleyball, pickleball line painting) No permanent nets.
  • New triple hoop basketball
  • Running track
  • Outdoor classrooms (seating area)
  • Gardening area, benches, shade structure, stock tank planters, harvest table
  • New benches and seating spaces
  • Baseball diamond with backstop
    Rest assured all work is being completed in accordance with strict government regulations established
    under the Occupational Health & Safety Act. Along with the TDSB’s Facility Services staff, we will
    continue to monitor the project as it progresses to ensure the safety of students and staff at all times. Please
    note, the construction zone will be fully fenced off to ensure student safety during school hours.
    As we might expect, these kinds of projects also bring challenges and inconveniences that need to be
    managed with flexibility. Please see below for important information about changes to our schoolyard
    during the period of construction.
  • The turf field and the south side of the field (entry from Sutherland Drive) will be closed during
    construction (June 6th – June 27th).
  • Access to the school from the Sutherland Road North footpath will remain open during school
    days.
  • After the last day of school on June 27, the entire back school yard will be closed for the summer –
    no access from Sutherland Drive.
  • Summer access to the school will be from Rumsey Road, using Door #2 and the dedicated
    Northlea Child Care Centre entrance.
    Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. While some inconvenience is inevitable, even
    as we do our very best to minimize that, I know we all agree that the end result will bring many benefits to
    our students now and for many years to come.
